Cancer prevention is not as difficult as many may believe.
A large percentage of cancer-related deaths may be - are directly linked to lifestyle choices such as smoking, drinking, and a lack of exercise. But the majority of the reason is, due to an unhealthy diet.
The research shows that only 5-10% of all cancer cases can be caused by genetic defects, but the remaining 90-95% of all cancers are due to identified factors, and thus are potentially preventable.
Therefore Cancer prevention is identifying and eliminating carcinogens, the agent that causes cancer.
Recognized carcinogens causes are:
1. Cigarette smoke contains 4000 chemicals, more than 50 of them have been found to cause cancer.
2. Alcohol invites cancer by damaging the cells of the upper-respiratory tract and liver.
Choose not to drink alcohol, or choose to drink only in moderation. No more than 2 glass per day for men and 1 for women.
3. Obesity and physical inactivity may account for several major cancers of the colon, breast, kidney, pancreas, prostate, gallbladder, and liver.
According to U.S. National Library of Medicine obesity has been associated with increased mortality from cancer in the United States, 14% in men and 20% in women, especially among those people who have carnivorous eating habit.
4. Number of research studies has proved that cancer is much more common in populations consuming deep fried fatty foods such as chips, French fries, harsh brown, coated chicken etc.
The high temperatures used for frying such dishes produce a harmful carcinogenic chemical compound, which is known as Acrylamide.
5. Foods that is rich in refined sugars, processed carbohydrates, preservatives and cooked in hydrogenated oil Such as, donuts, cakes, pastries etc. carry free radicals which promotes cancerous cells to grow.
6. Sweetened beverages, sodas and many juices contain high quantity of some artificial sweetener which is proved to be a health threatening agent.
7. Some processed meat products like hot dogs, bacon or bologna good to be avoided.
Because they contain sodium nitrate as a key preservative, which prevent the growth of spoiling bacteria and as an additive to the flavour of the product, cause blood cancer in children.
8. According to the American Cancer Society, When meats or any other animal related foods get cooked by Grilling, broiling or Barbecues, two types of carcinogenic substances get produced, as a by-product of cooking with a high heat on over long periods of time and get burned. One of these is called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) and the other one is known as hetero cyclic amines (HCAs).
When meats get burned then it becomes carcinogenic. Therefore Minimize the amount of time food stays on the grill. Cook on the stove or bake in the oven and then put them on the grill for a few minutes to add flavor.
9. Use of Plastic containers especially carry-out containers from restaurants, recycled margarine tubs, dairy food containers, and plastic trays containing microwave able entrees and butcher trays of meat, poultry or fish should not be used in microwave.
Combination of high heat and plastic releases a harmful cancer causing chemical known as dioxins into the food, particularly the greasy and fatty foods.
Consider of using glass, Corning ware or ceramic container, waxed paper or plain white paper towel.
10. Avoid exposure of some toxins entirely through simple lifestyle choices. Such as chemical contained cosmetics, Personal Care Products, home-care products, baby-care products, laundry care products, herbicide and pesticides.
Lot of brands are available in the market that uses natural sources as ingredients in the above mentioned products.
11. The sun rays help to produce Vitamin D, but sometimes it could be the reason of cancer, if the required precaution measure is not taken care of.
Avoid the sun, especially from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
If you're going to be under the sun for long length of time, wear long sleeves clothes made from light colored pure cotton fabric so the sun's rays can't get through to your skin, broad-brimmed hat to protect your face, neck, shoulders and ears and sun glasses to protect the eyes.
Apply good quality sun screen on exposed skin and stay in the shade when you can.
12. But when the person's immune system is strong most carcinogens are neutralized before damage can occur.
Some vitamins, minerals and photochemical in plant foods are known to be Antioxidant, boost the immune system in their individual anti-cancer effects.
Foods high in Beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin E, selenium and vitamin C significantly increase elimination of toxins and free radicals known to cause cellular changes that are the root of cancer.
Not all health problems are avoidable, but by monitoring and twisting our inputs, we can influence and even determine our well-being. The inputs include the choices we make by changing some major lifestyle factors. Health is really just a system of inputs and outputs for good or ill.
