Skin and Aging - Natural Antioxidant Treatments For Younger Looking Skin

What is so important about antioxidants for skin and aging? Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals. Any molecule or atom in the body can become a free radical. When that happens it will balance itself by picking up an electron from the neighbouring molecule which in turn becomes a free radical and the vicious cycle continues. If it not controlled, damage occurs. Antioxidants may prevent some of the damage free radicals cause.
Most of the visible signs of aging are from exposure to environmental factors which can lead to free radical formation. Sun, diet, pollution, chemicals in products, gravity and stress all add years to your skin. There is a way to fight back. Look for skin care products that add powerhouse antioxidants to keep skin firm and young looking.
* Vitamin E - This vitamin protects cell membranes from sun damage caused by UVA rays.
* Vitamin C - Studies have shown that using topical vitamin C decreases sun damage and reduces age spots.
* Coenzyme Q10 - Regular use of coQ10 can reduce wrinkle depth.
* Green or white tea - Researchers found that the tea prevented the activities of the enzymes which breakdown collagen and elastin which can lead to wrinkles. One study found that EGCG, a specific type of polyphenol found almost exclusively in green and white tea, reactivates dying skin cells and improves overall skin condition.
* Berries - Ellagic acid is an antioxidant found in many fruits, vegetables and nuts, but especially raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and pomegranates. Ellagic acid works to protect against UV damage by blocking production of MMP (matrix metalloproteinase enzymes that break down collagen in damaged skin cells) and by reducing the expression of ICAM (a molecule involved in inflammation).
Different antioxidants neutralize different free radicals. Use a combination of different antioxidants to get the best results. Be patient. Try a product for two or three months. It will take a while for your skin to react to the antioxidants. Keep chemicals out of the mix and choose skin care products that are certified organic.
