Antioxidant Facts - How Antioxidants Can Help Heal

Antioxidants can either be found in the everyday food we eat or taken as a supplement to help make sure we are getting enough of these powerful vitamins. So here are some antioxidant facts. Basically when we breathe in oxygen they go to our cells which in turn introduce free radicals to those cells which cause tissue damage, promote aging, and can cause a number of diseases. Antioxidants protect your cells from this damage.
Some of the health issues that stem from free radical damage can range from heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. Antioxidants are your first line of defense from these things happening. What antioxidants also do is enhance your immune system and make you less prone to getting sick and being tired as well as help thwart of free radicals.
Some of the familiar antioxidants you have heard of are vitamin A,C,E and Selenium which is found in red meats, fish, garlic and eggs. Flavanoids also have antioxidants which are red wines, teas, and cranberries.
Now, antioxidants are very powerful and when I found out this next part on, what antioxidants will not do kind of surprised me but at the same time made sense. Per the Journal of the National Cancer Institute 2008;100(11):773-783. " The use of supplemental antioxidants during chemotherapy and radiation should be discouraged because of the possibility of tumor protection and reduced survival".
In a nutshell what this means is that when your doing your daily regiment of taking antioxidants to help prevent cancer from forming in your body that is really the best protection you can get, but if someone was diagnosed antioxidants would help protect these cancer cells after the tumor is already formed because at that point the antioxidant cannot distinguish between good or bad cells.
So being proactive and taking these powerhouse supplements can do wonders for your body and could possibly even prevent these things from happening.
